And these are bombed-out Russian tanks. You can’t imagine the size of a tank until you see it. It used to be a battlefield but I guess now it’s a kind of museum to the power of the Ukrainian army and the swiftness of Ukrainian graffiti artists.
This pile of bricks used to be my grandma’s house. Family pictures, kitchen table, a lot of love. She’s ok. Russians left their food rations. They dug trenches in her garden, one under a red viburnum. The symbolism was lost on them, apparently.
Today we drove around Irpin, Bucha, and Hostomel. Right as we left the house, we turned onto a road that hosted a funeral procession. Everyone, everyone pulled over, got out of their cars, and got on their knees. The procession marched past a destroyed tank.
Then you catch crumbs of phone calls. “Oh, they were bombed yesterday? Only windows flew out? Thank god for that.” Or: “Yes it’s my third day of travel. At least the train is comfortable.” When you enter Ukraine, billboards that say Azovstal and Olenivka sail past your windows.
