The beginning of the war showed that Ukraine can resist Russian troops even without formal training and weapons. But the situation now is very different and substantive Russian advances are impossible, although attempts to do that would mean more Ukrainian lives lost. 22X
Furthermore, without western backing, one expert says Ukraine has likely reached a "tipping point" in its ability to stave off Russia and avoid losing territory. 20/
FT says that Western military assistance, including sufficient weapons and munitions, will be key but is uncertain as US aid has ceased pending Congressional approval of new funding. 19/
FT says that experts believe there is little prospect for breakthroughs by either side in 2024, with a strategy of active defense allowing Ukraine to "build out its forces" to possibly counterattack in 2025. 17/
This is probably true that the lines might not move a lot in the coming months or the entire year. But Ukraine and Russia will continue to attack each other using drones and missiles. A recent successful attack on the Russian warship is another example that the war stays hot 18/
And that Ukraine is building new fortifications on key frontline segments per President Zelenskyy, signaling a shift from offense to defense. I disagree with the last assessment. Ukraine indeed is building its defense lines, but that's only prudent. 15/
It now saves people, hold the line, and probes with technology for vulnerabilities in the Russian defenses, including far in the Russian country. 13/
