Soviet losses: Afghanistan, Ukraine, and the Battle of Berlin compared

There are only two points of comparison: the Soviets lost 14,453 in Afghanistan between 1979-1989, and 30,676 in the guerrilla war that took place in Ukraine between 1944-1953. In terms of rate of loss, it's the worst since the 1945 Battle of Berlin (81,116 dead in 16 days).
