According to a German Foreign Ministry spokesman, the aim was "to bomb every building in Britain marked with three stars in the Baedeker Guide". The initial wave of attacks hit Exeter, Bath (pic), Canterbury, Norwich and York, killed 1,637 civilians and wrecked 50,000 houses. /8
