Ukraine’s 1990 “Chain of Unity” declared freedom from USSR

7/10 Ukraine’s fight for freedom persisted into the 20th century. On 21 January 1990, up to three million Ukrainians formed the “Chain of Unity,” a human chain spanning 470 miles from Ivano-Frankivsk in the west to Kyiv, declaring their aspiration for freedom from the USSR.
