Avdiivka was liberated by Ukrainian forces on 28-30 July 2014, after months under pro-Russian militants. For nearly a decade, it withstood constant shelling. In Feb 2024, to avoid encirclement and save lives, Ukraine withdrew. Russia razed the city and now uses it as a base.
