Butkevych is a co-founder of Zmina Human Rights Centre and Hromadske Radio. He joined Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2022 and was captured and sentenced to 13 years in prison by Russian forces. He was released in a prison exchange in 2024 after enduring over two years of captivity.
