African Swine Fever and Blackouts Devastate Ukraine’s Pork Farmers

For 20 years, Ukraine has imported pork. For the past year, Ukrainian farmers watched African swine fever wipe out a third of the national herd while Russian blackouts killed climate control on the farms that survived. Margins collapsed from 47 to 7.5 hryvnias per kilogram.
