Quite apart from anything else, I've no doubt there'll need to be a huge effort to rebuilt the Ukrainian military after the war. Russian losses have been getting all the attention but as @oryxspioenkop has recorded, the Ukrainians have lost a lot too (and had less to start with).

I'd expect that the Ukrainians will continue pushing the Russians back from the east of Chernihiv, most likely seeking to throw them out of their wider foothold on the south bank of the Desna River. /end

Russian encirclement attempt south-east of city thwarted, M01 access secured.
They formed part of a Russian salient to the south-east of the city. The Russians were clearly trying to carry out an encirclement and cut the M01, blocking Ukrainian resupply or retreat. That will be much harder to do now. /2
